“Erosion is a mechanical process, usually driven by water, wind, gravity, or ice, which transports sediment and earth from the place of weathering.” This process forms the fluid structures of the rocky caves of Galliano Island on the unneeded territory of the Coast Salish, which serves as the environment for this editorial series.
Its namely separation is a nod to the name of Look 2, a preview of a piece from ORIENS’s first official collection: “Collection 001.” Named “Eros” after the Greek entity for erotic love, as well as the sum of life-preserving instincts that are manifested as sublimated impulses to gratify basic human needs and to protect and preserve the body and mind. Beyond “Ion”’s chemical definition of an electric charge, its rhythmic counterpart of “aeon” intimates Eternity.
This idea of eroticism against basic human instinct and eroded negative spaces for the body to fit into or against, both in environmental and sartorial forms, echoes ORIENS’s core exploration into dichotomies as reflected in its name’s symbolic visual of horizons, opposites, and forward motion into the future. Continuing with the connective fascination of environment and bodily exploration of natural spaces shared between ORIENS’s designer and director Shirley Tang and photographer Jack Pekarsky, “Eros - ion” further muses the interaction between body, garment, and space, fitting garments both strong and sensually feminine onto bodies draped against the organic contours of the eroded rock forms.
